Last Friday Year 8 students, Alex Law and Lilly Swyer represented the school at the STEM Club of the Year Competition which took place in the Advanced Technology Centre on the Bispham Campus of Blackpool and The Fylde College.
The students had to convince a panel of judges from B&FC, Centrica, Cuadrilla and the Lancashire Evening Post why GCA’s school STEM Club is the best amongst a competition of 6 other secondary schools from the area. Alex and Lilly talked to the judges about
- The history of the club and how it has grown
- Types of activities, trips or experiments the club has undertaken
- How they plan to expand or improve in the future.
GCA won this competition last year, securing £2000 for resources at the STEM Club and within the Science department.
They also presented their individual prototypes which they have been developing with their colleagues during STEM Club as part of the schools involvement with a large national competition organised by Cisco called the Cisco Little BIG Awards where students are asked; Can you connect the unconnected? The students have been producing designs connecting everyday things to the internet which they believe could make life better.
Here Lilly is showing her team’s ‘Melon’ Solar Powered Holographic mobile phone which could act as a content projector in both the education and gaming sectors eliminating the need for projectors, projector screens and TV monitors.
The winners of the competition will be announced at the Young Engineers STEM Skills challenge on Friday 5th February, but whatever the outcome Alex and Lilly were great ambassadors for Science and GCA. Well done!
