During the recent October half-term break, two dedicated Garstang Community Academy students took a fantastic step toward their futures by attending the NHS Insight Day at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

Huge congratulations to Umaiza (Year 11) and Isabelle (Year 10) for successfully completing the immersive event!

The event organisers were thoroughly impressed by their enthusiasm, commenting:

"The students were an absolute credit to Garstang Community Academy; they engaged brilliantly with all the workshops and showed real passion for learning about healthcare careers."

The action-packed day provided Umaiza and Isabelle with a comprehensive, behind-the-scenes look into the healthcare sector. Throughout the day, they participated in a wide variety of hands-on workshops, interactive sessions, and informative presentations, covering key topics such as:

  • Overview of the NHS: Understanding how healthcare delivery works across the trust.
  • Resuscitation Session: Gaining practical life-saving knowledge and skills.
  • Hand Hygiene & Infection Prevention: Learning essential clinical standards to protect patient safety.
  • Specialism Spotlights: Exploring specific career pathways in Children’s Nursing and Radiography.
  • Site Tour: Experiencing the inner workings of a busy operational hospital.
  • Higher Education & Future Steps: A tailored talk and interactive activity hosted by the University of Cumbria, alongside advice on entry qualifications and valuable work experience.

Taking part in enrichment activities like the NHS Insight Day gives our students a real competitive edge. Not only does it help build a strong CV and personal statement for post-16 applications, but it also allows students to develop core employability skills, such as communication, problem-solving, and practical awareness, while exploring potential career paths.

We are extremely proud of both Umaiza and Isabelle for taking the initiative to broaden their horizons and invest in their ambitions over the school holidays. Well done to you both!
