Our Year 9 students had an unforgettable experience, stepping into the world of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and the bustling transport industry during a dedicated familiarisation day, made possible in part by the expertise of Ultima Skills Training. The event, designed to provide valuable career insights and practical skills, proved to be a resounding success.

The day kicked off with crucial safety protocols, emphasising the importance of awareness around these large vehicles. Students learned about blind spots, safe distances, and the potential hazards associated with HGVs, equipping them with essential knowledge for road safety.

The highlight for many was the hands-on experience, which included detailed vehicle inspections facilitated by professionals from Ultima Skills Training. Students got to climb into the cab, learn about the different components, and understand the intricacies of pre-drive checks.

Further practical activities, also supported by Ultima Skills Training, included cargo loading and unloading demonstrations and activities, giving students a glimpse into the logistics of transporting goods. They also participated in a vehicle security search, learning the importance of vigilance and attention to detail in the transport industry.

There was also an impressive demonstration by Mr. McKiernan, showcasing his expert HGV reversing skills!!

The HGV familiarisation day, with the valuable collaboration of Ultima Skills Training, aimed to foster practical skills, promote awareness, and introduce students to potential career paths within the transport industry. By providing hands-on experience and expert demonstrations, the event successfully broadened students' understanding of this vital sector.

We are incredibly grateful to Ultima Skills Training, and everyone involved in making this day such a memorable and educational experience for our Year 9 students. This initiative is a testament to our commitment to providing diverse learning opportunities that extend beyond the traditional classroom, and to building strong community partnerships.
