A group of Year 9 students enjoyed an unforgettable careers experience as they explored the world of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and the wider transport industry. With support from Ultima Skills Training, the visit provided an engaging mix of handson activities and realworld industry knowledge.

The day began with an introduction to essential HGV safety protocols. Students learned about blind spots, safe stopping distances and the potential hazards associated with large vehicles—knowledge that not only supports future career exploration but also promotes safer behaviour on the roads.

One of the highlights of the visit was the hands-on vehicle familiarisation session. With guidance from Ultima Skills Training professionals, students carried out detailed vehicle inspections, explored the cab, and gained an understanding of the key components involved in pre-drive checks. This practical element gave them a genuine feel for the responsibilities involved in operating and maintaining HGVs.

Students also took part in cargo-loading and unloading activities, offering a glimpse into the logistics processes that keep goods moving across the country. A vehicle security search further emphasised the importance of vigilance, problem-solving and attention to detail—skills highly valued across the transport sector.

The HGV familiarisation day aimed to broaden students’ understanding of the transport and logistics industry, highlight potential career pathways, and build practical skills through real-world experiences. Thanks to the support of Ultima Skills Training, the event achieved all of this and more.

We are extremely grateful to Ultima Skills Training and everyone involved for providing such a memorable and educational opportunity.
