A group of enthusiastic Year 10 students enjoyed an exciting and insightful visit to Lancaster University this week, taking part in a full day of activities designed to broaden their understanding of future pathways and life in Higher Education. The visit formed part of the school’s ongoing commitment to raising aspirations and helping students make informed choices about their futures.
Throughout the day, students engaged in a series of interactive sessions led by Lancaster University’s Widening Participation Team. The first, Day in the Life of a Student, offered a lively Q&A panel with current undergraduates who shared their personal journeys into Higher Education and gave an honest look at what everyday student life is really like. Students were able to ask questions about courses, accommodation, workload, and the social side of university.
This was followed by What’s Next for Me?, an informative session exploring the different pathways available at key decision points at ages 16 and 18. Lancaster University students supported the session by sharing their own experiences of choosing A‑levels, apprenticeships, and degree routes, helping pupils understand the wide range of options open to them.
A highlight of the day was the interactive campus tour, where pupils explored lecture theatres, study spaces, social areas, and the wider university environment. The tour gave them a real sense of what it feels like to be part of a university community.
Year 10 student Lily reflected on the experience, saying: “I really enjoyed it — it gave me a great insight into university life. My favourite part of the day was the tour of the campus and listening to the Ambassadors talk about their day as a Lancaster University student.”
Gareth Williams, from Lancaster University’s Widening Participation Team, praised the group’s engagement throughout the visit. He commented: “It was a pleasure to welcome Garstang students to campus today. They took part enthusiastically, asked thoughtful questions, and really made the most of the opportunities offered. It was clear they gained a great deal from the experience.”
The trip proved to be an inspiring and informative day, giving students a valuable glimpse into the world of Higher Education and helping them feel more confident about the choices that lie ahead.
