Year 10 Computer Science pupils took part in an exciting opportunity as part of the Lancashire Cyber Festival. Preston College hosted a Cyber Day and our students were delighted to attend this highly engaging and informative event.
Throughout the day, pupils immersed themselves in a series of hands‑on workshops focused on digital safety, coding, and cybersecurity. As the group all study Computer Science, the experience directly enhanced their understanding of key topics within the subject and allowed them to apply their classroom learning in real‑world contexts. They thoroughly enjoyed the activities and embraced the chance to challenge themselves in new ways.
A Day Filled with Interactive Learning
Students took part in a range of sessions, including:
- The Imitation Game: Encrypt and Decrypt Pupils explored how information is protected and experimented with different encryption methods.
- Online Armor: Share and Like This workshop deepened their understanding of online safety, digital footprints, and responsible digital behaviour.
- Firewall Breakout: Code Cracking A series of coding challenges encouraged logical thinking, teamwork, and creative problem‑solving.
- Hook or Hoax?: Phishing Detection Pupils learned how to identify online scams and gained a clearer understanding of how cyber threats operate.
Looking Ahead: Careers and Post‑16 Pathways
In addition to the practical activities, pupils gained valuable insight into careers within the digital and cybersecurity sectors. They also learned about the range of post‑16 courses available at Preston College, helping them consider future pathways and opportunities in the rapidly growing tech industry.
